Recently discovered we are pleased to bring the final print of the series just one of my brother's works produced between 1986 and  2007.

This is a strong, sensitive drawing with convincing form and character; the main opportunities are around value control, edges, and focal point.

What works well

The expression is excellent: the eyes, drooping jowls, and slightly lowered head give a clear, gentle personality. Structure of the head is solid; planes of the skull, muzzle, and ears feel three‑dimensional and believable. The fur texture is varied and interesting, with a good mix of short and long strokes that suggest the heaviness of the coat Composition fills the page nicely; the diagonal of the body leads the eye back up to the head.

Edges and texture

There is beautiful detail in the fur with the level of texture fairly uniform across the whole dog.

Proportion and anatomy

Pete has gauged the proportions well and for a large, heavy breed; the weight and bulk are convincing.

The very subtle “S” curve of the spine and ribcage help to shape the torso and reinforce the sense of the dog resting and slumping into the ground.
